In celebration of the 15th anniversary of LAIKA’s animated film, “Coraline”, artists were chosen from near and far to paint a 5ft tall cat for a public art trail to be installed in Portland, OR from 8/2/2024-10/13/2024.

My design was chosen by our city’s amazing science museum, OMSI, and features quilt blocks and tiny illustrations for curious kiddos to discover. My goal was to recreate “fussy cut” quilts that feature specific fabric design elements, and to honor the Portland Modern Quilt Guild’s commitment to philanthropy through their charity sewing program that provides handmade quilts to patients in Doernbecher Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric ICU. The cats will be auctioned off at the end of the trail with proceeds going to Doernbecher.

Design Statement:

“Portland is a city full of makers and forward thinkers, this cat is inspired by the work of the members of the Portland Modern Quilt Guild. We all know cats are the official quilt inspectors, so why wouldn't they turn themselves up into one, given the opportunity. Giving someone a quilt is the next best thing to giving them a hug.”
